Electric 3 and 4 wheeled scooters
A scooter could be considered medically necessary if all of the following coverage criteria are met:
1) Your condition is such that a scooter is required for you to get around in your home, and
2) You are unable to operate a manual wheelchair.
3) You are capable of safely operating the controls for the scooter, and
4) You can transfer safely in and out of the scooter and have adequate trunk stability to be able to safely ride the scooter.
In addition, a patient who requires a scooter usually cannot perform functional ambulation skills and has limited strength or use of the upper extremities. The patient should also have adequate trunk stability to “hold” themselves upright in the seat.
Scooters can be purchased with cash at retail dealerships or by a combination of cash and INSURANCE. Often, the full reimbursement can be received for scooters.
